It’s nearly showtime for the cast and crew of “My Fair Lady,” and there’s something they want you to know: This musical may be a classic, but HHS North’s production is just as light and charming as ever.
In Lerner and Lowe’s comedy-drama, professor of phonetics Henry Higgins takes working-class flower seller Eliza Doolittle under his wing to transform her into his vision of an ideal lady. The show follows Eliza’s trials and hijinks throughout as she and Higgins learn from each other. “She’s a big character,” says senior Victoria Colon, who plays Eliza. “She’s amazing, but she has a temper.”
And Professor Henry Higgins? “A confirmed old bachelor,” says junior Aidan Fontanez-Courchesne of his character. “When he comes across Eliza, well, at first he doesn’t really like her. But he begins to go through a trial of his own teaching Eliza, and he might start to feel something else for her. You’ll have to see the show!”
The original Broadway production, which opened in 1956, ran for more than 2,700 shows and had a lasting impact, still being widely performed in theaters and schools across the world. “It’s a great story,” says director Mark Todd. “Though it’s an older musical, it was popular in its time and remains popular today.”
You can experience Holyoke High School’s rendition of this classic April 4-7 in the HHS North auditorium. Tickets are available now at Click4Tix, or at the door. Tickets are $8 for students, $10 for staff and faculty, and $12 for the general public.
