While there is some debate online about whether September or December is the official “Read a New Book Month,” there is no denying that reading can be fun and rewarding any day of the year. The colder winter months certainly lend themselves to snuggling up with a cozy blanket and a good book, and the holidays are a perfect time to introduce children to some new reading materials.
Holyoke Public Library offers a wide range of books to suit virtually every reader from early childhood on. Now is a good time to sign up for a library card if you don’t already have one. Families are also encouraged to enroll their children in the library’s Winter Reading Program. It’s easy. Just stop by the Children’s Room Between December 26 and 29 to sign up.
How will you and your family celebrate “Read a New Book Month” this year? Consider these suggestions from World Book, which began publishing encyclopedias more than 100 years ago:
Try reading a type of book you don’t normally read—and introduce your children to some new types, too. It’s fun to mix it up a bit!
Challenge yourself or your children to read nonfiction books and learn more about the world, from plants and animals, to sports, the arts, outer space, sports, arts and crafts, and so much more.
Buy a new book from a local store, order from an online retailer, or check out some new books from your local library.
