Throughout the 2023-24 school year, social and emotional learning (SEL) has been an integral part of Holyoke’s educational approach for all students in grades K-9. Students have been actively developing crucial skills for understanding and managing their emotions, fostering healthy relationships, and making responsible decisions.

HPS classroom teachers have been offering social and emotional learning opportunities based on the TRAILS SEL Curriculum. This approach has helped students acquire skills they need to identify and regulate their internal thoughts and emotions, establish meaningful relationships, and navigate challenges with resilience and confidence. These include:

  • Self awareness: Recognizing one's thoughts, emotions, and behavioral patterns.

  • Self management: Finding ways to regulate emotions and behaviors effectively.

  • Social awareness: Understanding and empathizing with others' perspectives and emotions.

  • Relationship skills: Building and maintaining healthy connections with peers and adults.

  • Responsible decision making: Making thoughtful choices guided by personal values and goals.

Research indicates that students who develop their social and emotional skills demonstrate improved academic performance and are better equipped to manage stress, cultivate positive relationships, and solve problems effectively.

“The benefits of SEL extend far beyond the classroom walls,” said HPS Director of Student Support Services Giselle Rojas. “These skills empower students to thrive in all aspects of their lives.”

The TRAILS SEL Curriculum draws upon cognitive behavioral theory (CBT) and mindfulness practices, proven approaches for promoting mental well-being in students. CBT emphasizes the connection between thoughts, emotions, and actions, while mindfulness encourages present-moment awareness. These foundational skills equip students with tools to manage stress, nurture relationships, and tackle challenges constructively.

“We encourage our families to maintain open communication with their children's schools regarding the specific SEL skills practiced in the classroom. School principals and counselors are also available to assist families in understanding what is being taught,” Ms. Rojas said. “Family involvement in reinforcing SEL skills at home is invaluable, especially regular practice and modeling of these skills with children.”
