In front of construction-paper backdrops and carrying cardboard props, 13 second-grade students in Lina Saravia’s dual language classroom at Kelly School closed their language arts unit this spring with a performance of short skits based on poetry they learned in the last quarter of the year.
The first poem “Patitas mensajeras” (“Messenger little legs”) by author Maria de Lourdes Victoria described butterflies pollinating flowers. Students performing as flowers included Alexis Guzman, Alondra Quiñonez, Pamela Quiñonez, Briannily Colón, Jaylina Alonzo, and Victor Pirela. Students performing as butterflies included Naylian Collazo, Pedro Ayala, Alianis García y Hansel Pantoja.
The second poem “La ardilla” “(“The squirrel”) by author Amado Nervo featured Jordan Paris as a playful squirrel, accompanied by Sophia Segarra as a mother and Briannily Colón as her daughter.
The third poem “Viva el sol de la mañana” (“Long live the morning sun”) by author Rafael Alberti described the sun shining on everything below, from oranges to birds, to the roofs of buildings.
