Students in grades PreK-8 are encouraged to read for at least 30 minutes every day from June 21 through August 25 as part of a city-wide summer reading challenge organized by Holyoke Public Schools and Holyoke Public Library. (Of course, we also encourage our high school students to read daily, too!)
How to participate in the challenge:
Children should read at least 30 minutes a day and then record their time in a reading log.
A family member or caregiver should initial the log for each entry of recorded time.
Children should return their completed reading logs to their school Friday, September 6.
The summer reading challenge includes recommended reading lists in English and Spanish for each grade level to assist students and their families when selecting books to read.
Students will need to record their reading minutes in a daily reading log, which must be returned to their schools by Friday, September 6 to be in the running to win prizes. One student from each grade level district-wide who has read the most minutes will receive a tablet.
“Summer is a great time to pick up a book and read,” said HPS Director of English Language Arts Andrea Salvas. “We encourage families to read together and enjoy their favorite stories and articles this summer.”
