The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education on Monday, April 28, provided Holyoke Public Schools with a list of exit assurances that will support the district when receivership ends and local control resumes.

That transition is scheduled to take place effective July 1.

“The purpose of issuing exit assurances for HPS’ anticipated transition to local control is to promote the continued improvement of the district by providing stability of systems and practices that HPS has cultivated under state receivership,” said Interim Commissioner Patrick Tutwiler. “These exit assurances will help to provide continuity in the teaching and learning experiences across all HPS classrooms for a transitional period of up to two years, while the School Committee onboards a new permanent superintendent who will lead HPS through its next cycle of strategic planning.”

HPS Superintendent Anthony Soto expressed his appreciation for DESE’s support throughout the process.

“Thank you to Interim Commissioner Tutwiler and his team for consulting with the Holyoke School Committee and Holyoke Teachers Association and incorporating their feedback on the exit assurances that were released on Monday evening,” he said. “These exit assurances will help support a strong transition from receivership to local control, while minimizing disruptions to the day-to-day operations of our schools.”
