Holyoke Safe Neighborhood Initiative’s annual back to school celebration is set for this Saturday, August 24, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at McNally Field, located behind Kelly School. Organizers and volunteers have prepared 2,500 backpacks full of school supplies to give away to Holyoke students, along with free activities, music, and food for children of all ages.
Ed Caisse of the Hampden County Sheriff's Department and its Holyoke Safe Neighborhood Initiative program launched the annual event in 2012 as a way to provide school supplies to support Holyoke school children. Over the years, the event continues to grow, offering substantial positive impact for thousands of families.
This year’s free activities are wide ranging, with hands-on children’s activities such as a rock climbing wall, bounce house, and water slides; carnival activities including face painting, pony rides, and a balloon stand; and services such as haircuts and family portraits. A vaccine clinic will take place during the event to help ensure every child is up-to-date on required and suggested immunizations before the school year begins.
Event sponsors include the City of Holyoke, Springfield Pharmacy, Holyoke Board of Health, People’s Bank, Sodexo, Cradles to Crayons, Pedal Thru Youth, Faded, and Ocean State Job Lot, plus many others.
“While we love our neighboring communities, this event and the giveaways are for students who live in the City of Holyoke,” said Mr. Caisse. No registration or income verification is required to attend this free event.
