Coming to school every day is a feat to be celebrated—and so is making significant improvement in attendance over the course of a term.
More than 50 students from across district schools were honored on Wednesday, November 21 for their excellent or improved attendance during the first term of school. Superintendent Anthony Soto opened the event with remarks, congratulating students—and their families—for their achievements.
“Coming to school each day matters. I know I don’t need to tell you that, but I need you to tell your friends,” said Superintendent Soto, encouraging students in the room to help their friends and neighbors come to school each day. Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Steven Moguel followed with additional words of encouragement, celebrating the work of the families in the room who help their children get to school each day.
Following the remarks, each student was recognized by name, receiving a gift from their school and shaking hands with their school Family and Community Engagement coordinator, principal, and Superintendent Soto. Families enjoyed a dinner catered by Sodexo, followed by a prize raffle with gifts for students and families.
“I’m so happy to be here,” said Eli Colon Amador, a fourth grade student at McMahon School, who was honored for improved attendance. “I like getting to know the high school since I’ll be going there soon. Now I’ve seen the cafeteria!”
