worker installs final beam at top of new middle school under construction

As a construction crane lowered the final beam to the top of the steel framework that is forming the underpinning of Holyoke’s new middle school on a breezy Monday afternoon this week, a crowd of more than 50 onlookers cheered and shared smiles and hugs in celebration of achieving this milestone.

Attendees included city councilors, city leaders, School Committee members, School Building Committee members, a neighbor, school leaders, district leaders, state delegates, representatives from the Massachusetts School Building Authority, members of the construction consultant team, and journalists from local media outlets.

"Most importantly, this school represents hope,” Superintendent Anthony Soto told those assembled. “It signifies that this city is committed to investing in its future and in the belief that education is the cornerstone of a thriving community. Let us remember the responsibility that comes with it: that this school becomes not just a building, but a beacon of learning and possibility for all who pass through these doors.”

The entire topping off ceremony is captured in this 17-minute video. A highlight reel is captured in the four-minute video below.
