Morgan students learn SEL in the classroom

Morgan Elementary School's second-graders have been learning valuable life skills as they participate in social-emotional learning focused on stress management through the TRAILS SEL curriculum implemented districtwide this year.

“Social emotional learning is really important because so many of our kids—and even us as adults—bring a lot of things into the school building that we sometimes have challenges with,” said Adjustment Counselor Christa Nunnally. “Being able to function well mentally and emotionally is crucial for kids to be able to learn effectively.”

The TRAILS program equips students with practical tools for managing stress in a supportive environment so they can more comfortably share their emotions and learn from one another. By integrating SEL into the curriculum for students in grades K-9, Holyoke Public Schools provides direct instruction that helps students face academic and personal challenges in a positive, constructive and successful manner.
