Anthony Soto with Ramona Provost and family

Over the summer, students in grades K-8 participated in the district’s summer reading challenge, organized in partnership with the Holyoke Public Library. Students were challenged to read for 30 minutes a day during the eight-week break, both on their own and with their family.

Last month, Superintendent Soto visited students who read the most, surprising them in their classrooms to present them with prizes, including new tablets. The district’s top seven readers completed an astounding 17,711 minutes of reading. That’s the equivalent of 295 hours, or more than 12 days combined.

Students who logged the most minutes reading over the summer include:

  • Isaac J. Izquierdo Lopez, grade 3, Donahue, 863 minutes

  • Jack Merriam, grade 1, McMahon, 2,255 minutes

  • Ramona Provost, grade 2, McMahon, 2,100 minutes

  • Kellen Smith, grade 7, Holyoke STEM Academy, 2,285 minutes

  • Graham Weiss, grade 2, E.N. White, 5,768 minutes

  • Myles Weiss, grade 6, Sullivan, 4,440 minutes

  • Kalista Wiggins, grade 4, E.N. White, 2,485 minutes
